City of Ipswich

The City of Ipswich is located in south-east Queensland, about 40 kilometres south-west of the Brisbane CBD. The City of Ipswich is bounded by the Somerset Regional Council area and Brisbane City in the north, Logan City in the east, the Scenic Rim Regional Council area in the south, and the Lockyer Valley Regional Council area in the west.

Traditional Owners

The original inhabitants of the City of Ipswich were the Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul Aboriginal people.

Jagera People

The Jagera people, also written Yagarr, Yaggera, Yuggara, Yuggera, Chepara-Yuggara, Chepara-Yugara, Ugarapul, Yugarabul, Yuggarapul, and Yugarapul (pul-People that speak Yug[g]ara) are the Australian Aboriginal people who spoke the Yuggera language.

The Yuggera language which encompassed a number of dialects was spoken by the traditional owners of the territories from Moreton Bay to the base of the Toowoomba ranges including the city of Brisbane[citation needed] and Ipswich. The groups who spoke dialects of the Yuggera language that lived in the region include the Turrbal People, Jagera People, Yugara People, Yuggera Ugarapul People, Jagera Yagera Gurrangnam.
